June 17 Science Café on Lampreys
Dr. Barbara Zielinski, award-winning professor of Biological Sciences and the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research at the University of Windsor presents the next Science Café on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, entitled "The Sea Lamprey, Vampire of the Great Lakes." Sea Lampreys are parasitic blood-sucking fish native to the North Atlantic that have been around since before the dinosaurs. Starting in the mid 1900s, they have appeared in the great Lakes as an invasive species and inflicted serious damage on the fisheries there. Dr. Zielinski will tell us of her promising research using sex pheromones to control their populations.
Earth Day Dinner 2015 was Success
Science City's 10th Earth Day Dinner on Sunday evening, April 26, 2015, was a great success. Our guest speaker, Dr. Melanie Campbell, professor of Physics and in the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Waterloo, described how her basic research into the optics of the eye held promise for early diagnosis of brain disease, including Alzheimer's. In addition, long-term volunteer Admoon Narsa received recognition for his many contributions to Science City and 10 winners of the school poster and poetry contest were recognized.

What's Here?
There's plenty to do and see at Science City. Kids really love the fossil dig, shadowland, and the human bubble. We also have live animals (snakes, turtles, fish, tarantulas, geckos, ...) and a time tunnel of historical telephones, photo equipment, TVs, computers, and so on. We house a Parkway exhibit, too, showing how the Herb Gray Parkway is being constructed to preserve natural habitats. But our emphasis is on hands-on interactive exhibits showing principles of physical science and biodiversity. We have about a hundred of these.

New! Tutorials in Math & Science
Students are often pushed into advanced classes before they are comfortable with the basics. This is especially problematic in math. It's easy to get behind and to want to give up. We offer individual and small-group tutorials in math and science, given by qualified university graduate students or upper-level undergraduates, starting October 2, 2013. Our tutorials build an understanding of concepts through hands-on problem solving.
Congratulations, Tony!
